Counting notes
Word counts are estimated by splitting text on whitespace. Character counts include spaces and line breaks; the no-spaces count excludes all whitespace. Sentence counts are approximate.
Understand the word and character counts
Paste or type text to see its word, character, character-without-spaces, sentence, and paragraph counts update. Use the figures as a quick editing aid for drafts, form limits, captions, and other text with a target length.
How this counter defines each measure
- Words: estimated by splitting the text at whitespace. A hyphenated phrase without spaces is counted as one item by this rule.
- Characters: includes spaces and line breaks; the without-spaces value excludes whitespace.
- Sentences: approximate, because abbreviations and unusual punctuation do not always mark a sentence boundary.
- Paragraphs: useful as a quick structural count, but exact expectations can vary by editor or publishing system.
Use the target platform's rule for final checks
Different forms and publishing platforms may count words, characters, emoji, and line breaks differently. If a strict limit matters, paste the final text into the destination field and use its own count or validation message. This tool is designed for a fast estimate, not a guarantee that another service will use identical counting rules.
